More than a century after Van Gogh’s death his art still captivates its viewers.
Van Gogh did not have any formal art training yet he completed over 800 paintings and drawings, all within a short 10 year period. In 1880, after having failed as a lay preacher, Van Gogh began his work as an artist. From 1881 to 1885 he lived in the Netherlands and painted peasants and workers. His most famous painting of this period was The Potato Eaters. In 1886 Van Gogh moved to Paris where his art was influenced by the movements of Impressionism and Japanese woodblocks. His use of color changed. He no longer used color to simply recreate what he saw but instead as symbolic and expressive. By 1888 Van Gogh had moved to Arles but had yet to sell any paintings.
Before his death in 1890 Van Gogh only sold one painting, Red Vineyard at Arles. After his death his fame grew and he is now known internationally as one of the greatest Dutch painters and draughtsman. Among his most well known masterpieces are Sunflowers and The Starry Night.
